Old Things: Me, My Clothes and My Outfits

I'm not sure if I'm feeling nostalgic because it's my birthday week or if I'm gravitating to older things in my wardrobe because I too am getting to be an older thing. Either way this past week, I've been dressing in some wardrobe veterans. I've updated them with some new accessories, but these are some items that have been in my closet for quite a while now.

Also there seems to be a recurring "3s" theme. I'm in my third decade, I'm leaving the age of 33 and here I am this past week in three outfits inspired by three different decades:

1950s

Stripes: Stripped Down

I love stripes. Always have. I remember one of my favourite gymnastics bodysuits (yes I was a competitive gymnast), was a full length unitard (yikes) that was black in the back, light surf green in the front with a cream racing stripe running down each side. Essentially three giant stripes made up my suit.

At a party we hosted in Toronto a few years ago, a girl came who I didn't know well and who had never been to our place before. I remember her saying "boy you like stripes." I hadn't given it too much thought, but then I looked around our apartment and saw we had a striped duvet cover, a striped shower curtain, a striped couch and I was wearing a striped dress. I think I may have even bought striped paper plates for the party.

Here's an outfit that I wore the other day. Here I mix stripes. Mixing patterns and prints can be a mildly intimidating process. This is about a 0.5 on the difficulty scale of mixing patterns as I keep the print and the colour the same and I'm only mixing two items. The only thing that I change up is the scale of the stripe. (Note: that even the background in the photo is kind of striped)

Valentine's Day picks from the shop...

This abstract rose and hexagon print dress would be a perfect outfit for a semi-casual dinner and drinks date. Pair with heeled boots and a blazer. Maybe during dinner, let one of the buttons fall open.

Going for a nice walk outside on the big romantic "hallmark" holiday? If you live in a milder climate (like here in Vancouver), this honeysuckle cape will have your honey guessing what's underneath.

Spring Ready to Wear (by me please)

I really wanted to do this post in the fall, when the Spring Ready To Wear collections were showing, but alas October through December got away from me. And yes, I’m aware Pre-Fall 2011 collections are now showing. But I actually think it is a good time to post some spring fashion- nothing like escaping the January blahs and dreary weather by looking at gorgeous spring/summer clothing.

While I've never been a slave to labels or crazy for Fashion Weeks etc, I was pretty smitten with many of the Spring 2011 collections. All those pretty dresses flouncing down the runways- how could I not take notice?! Here are some of my favourites.

I don't really document my outfits very often, but I do enjoy looking at other people's daily outfit blogs as they give me some inspiration. But last week, I had the opportunity to cover ECO Fashion Week for the Vancouver Observer and I felt it was fitting to share one of my outfits.

This is what I wore to the opening party. Since I don't have much eco-friendly fashion in my wardrobe (or so I thought), I decided to wear head to toe vintage. Turns out that I actually have quite the environmentally-friendly wardrobe as vintage is very eco chic.

I really did go head to toe vintage:

Coat: I bought this yellow, tweed, satin-lined, bracelet sleeve coat 11 years ago at a Value Village in Victoria. I knew back then that it was a fantastic find and it was only $19. I think that it may very well be my favourite vintage piece I've ever owned.

Dress: I got this indigo button up 40s style union worker dress on my first trip to Portland with my vintage partner in crime, Amy. I had the sleeves shortened and the skirt hemmed. I bought eight other dresses on that trip.

Shoes: I found these plaid peep toe 80s Stuart Weitzman heels on Etsy from She Hearts Vintage

Earrings: I just found these flower shaped clip-ons a couple of weeks ago at a church thrift sale.

Black slip: My mom's from the 80s. I told you I was head to toe!

Green Eyed Thrifting Monster

It's a fact that NY is a great city, tons of stuff to do, city that never sleeps and all that, but when it comes to thrifting, this city royally sucks. $20 for a t-shirt is not a thrift store price and neither is $40 for shoes....so unfortunately I sometimes get a case of the green eyed monster when I see other vintage ladies on Twitter announcing a carload of thrifted goodies. This dilemma has turned me into the Marco Polo of thrifting, I go in search of vintage all over the city and beyond, determined to find pockets of clothing I can in fact re-sell. A wonderful source this summer is stoop sales, there's a neighborhood in Brooklyn which seems to have sprouted at least 5 vintage-stocked stoop sales per weekend. So far I have met a stylist selling 12 years of vintage inventory, an antiques dealer who sells slightly damaged goods every few weeks outside her apartment and one incredibly lovely lady who has stacks of vintage patterns, magazines and clothes lined up outside her apartment building. $5 1940's dress? yes please! $15 Edwardian robe...yes! these are like my own teeny thrift stores right out on the street....which makes me very much dread winter and these vintage ladies retreating indoors with their wares....

Love a good spelling mistake. I spot them in restaurants and point to the menu while cracking up and the boy looks at me as if to say "what the hell am I doing with this nerd?". But I still love them, 'avacado' is of course the most pedestrian of vegetable errors but I came across this one in my neighbourhood this week and thought it was brilliant. It's obviously when a worm crosses some corn. Look out, we've got some corm here!

I love that people think of me when they have old things to give away. Especially when those old things are a very cool set of Norwegian dishes from the 1960s. Recently my Aunty Judy emailed me and asked if I wanted the Tor Viking set of dishes that she had bought in 1966. I'm sure you already know what my response was. We did the hand off last weekend and I am pretty stoked with my "new to me" dish set. AND the set looks pretty sweet with our 1960s two-toned green metal kitchen table to boot. Thanks Aunty J!

She lost a lot of flesh and it scattered all over the floor, I was horrified. Rose probably deserves a break after the trauma, dress form search begins.

I love this Etsy purchase from CheesecakeVintage. (currently on vacation from Etsy), but I can't seem to leave the house in it, it's as if the dots are screaming "look at me, look at MEEEEEE". Plus there's not a whole lot of wiggle room so.....big lunch? forget about it. Tomorrow, I'm going to wear it tomorrow.

Not So Neutral on Neutrals

Normally I'm not really into neutral things. Decisions: make one. Colour: wear some. Sides: pick one. I do like the Swiss though, especially their chocolate (thanks Cousin T.).

Neutral shoes however are a whole different cup of tea. I love them. And I love them for a variety of reasons.

1. They go with everything so you can stop worrying about matching or coordinating your shoes with your outfit. Summery dresses and skirts with a loud print or bright colour look polished with a neutral shoe. Neutral shoes also anchor denim really well and they look classic and sophisticated with your black, white or navy outfits.

2. They make your legs look longer. A neutral shoe will blend into your leg making it appear elongated as there is no break or visual interruption in the line.

3. Even if they aren’t vintage they often add a "vintagey" look to an outfit. Or maybe you aren't ready for full-fledged vintage outfits. A pair of tan, vintage shoes is a great first step into the world of all things old and awesome.

Guess what? We just happen to have a few pairs of neutral shoes in the shop.

Love a bit of black. My curtains are black, duvet is black, bathroom is black (yes it is). So when I saw the Lanvin '10 (I'm behind of course as everyone else saw it ages ago) I fell in love, would def' love anything right here except maybe the starved cheekbones, don't get me wrong I love a strong cheekbone but I also love a sandwich from time to time. The only good thing that I can see about trawling style.com (from whence these pics came) is that as a vintage shopper you can pretty much find the equivalent to anything you see on the runway. Like the first pic here, I recently found a similar, big shouldered black tweed-y 80's coat in a thrift store, was going to give it away but now I'm keeping it and when someone asks where I got it I'll say it's Pizazz made in '82 but doesn't it look so much like Lanvin!

Hello Yellow

Actually it's more like goodbye yellow as I just dyed my golden locks a dark auburn/ brown. So far, the only downside to my new dye job is that I can't wear yellow as easily as I used to. Lucky for me, a yellow skirt we had for sale on Etsy didn't sell and the little number is now mine for the keeping (I was secretly hoping it wouldn't sell as I wanted it for summer). Tip: if you love a colour but it's not flattering on you, wear it away from your face. Skirts, shoes or even your toenail polish are great ways to wear colours that aren't your best.

Yellow can be a hard colour to wear, but there is a flattering shade for almost everyone, whether it be marigold, mango or mustard.

Here's one of my favourite outfits from a movie. It's Doris Day in The Glass Bottom Boat. The movie isn't great, but this outfit is amazing. If anyone has access to an abundance of yellow suede and is a milliner, seamstress and cobbler, please call me. I would pay BIG bucks for a replica of this outfit.

Reading this book by Patti Smith about her life with Robert Mapplethorpe made me not only appreciate NYC all over again (though hardly any of the places mentioned exist anymore sadly) but also what a very cool and totally self-styled woman this is! Hitting the Hamptons

Heading out to the Hamptons for a visit with a friend proved even better when the yard sales were also hit! So much more affordable than one would think (though there were $2,000 rugs). Favourite finds were a Victorian lace dress for $7 and a quilted cowboy cushion for $3! Great things for sale; canoes, dressers, furs, books galore, paintings.....Now I would like to have a yard sale, but first better start with getting a yard. BBQ kept up the hunting energy...

Spring Dressing: Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold, Mmmm...Just Right:

I find early spring dressing difficult and often feel like I have a case of "the Goldilocks". Too cold for bare legs. Too warm for boots and tights. I don’t wear dress pants very often and I can’t wear jeans every day.

I do have some dresses and skirts that work for both winter and summer and I tend to gravitate to them. Wearing them with lighter coloured tights and flats/ heels or without tights but with boots is usually my solution.

If you love pants (I don’t as I find it hard to find one’s that fit me properly), try them with a more spring/summery shoe and a light trench coat. Trenches also look great with lighter weight fabric dresses and certain types of boots (i.e. slightly bohemian). The fashion peeps call the articles that work for this time of year “transition pieces”.

What’s your favourite transition piece or what are your suggestions for unpredictable early spring weather?

I think most women love a little sparkle in their wardrobe. I'm not talking about the beauty pageant variety, but a sequin top or sparkly shoe for cocktails? Absolutely.

I was recently reminded of this notion when a group of my friends travelled to Las Vegas for our friend Alex's 30th birthday. I wasn't able to partake in the festivities (i.e. rolling around on the casino floor), but I was able to be a part of some of the pre-trip shopping. The ladies took it to a whole new level of sparkly. I think the bedazzler was set to high that weekend.

Here's a close-up of Alex's sequined leggings which look amazing on her mile long legs.

Last month I also got to indulge my inner beauty pageant contestant. I bought an amazing red sequined vintage dress last fall and hadn't had the opportunity to wear it.....until recently. My man and I had tickets to the Gold Medal Olympic Hockey Game. As we were cheering for Canada (apologies to our US readers) and being that this was one of the most historic sporting events in Canada's history, we thought it would be appropriate to dress up. So I wore the dress. What I love about the dress is that while it's bright, red and sequined, it has a demure shape.

Today I was reminded of a rather hilarious Xmas couple years ago when I went to a friend's intimate Xmas dinner he had bought and cooked entirely alone and wonderfully, we all took champagne, dessert, you know the usual Holidays goodies. Turns out another guest knew singer Ben Lee, he came along and brought his girl, the actress Ione Skye. So, Xmas, there's guests, there's amazing food, there's champagne. At. Xmas. Guess what they brought?.....a bag of wholefoods cookies. Who does that? I've always wanted to share that. Here have some Moet Ben & Ione, oh ummm yes sure I'll have a wholefoods coconut cookie thanks. There it's out in the universe I'll let it go now.

I love dresses. I LOVE dressing in dresses. I love when other people are dressed in dresses. I have about 85 dresses in my closet. Many of them are vintage or thrifted. I even registered a blog called 85 dresses and counting just because I liked the name so much.

Here are 85 reasons why I love a dress:

1. One article of clothing and you are dressed, not counting undergarments, unless you go commando (don’t worry we don’t judge).

2. There is a dress for every occasion. Seriously. Work, beach, cocktails, dinner, shopping, travel. Well at least there is a dress for every occasion in my life (because that’s my life in six words). Oh and the gym. I guess you can’t wear a dress to the gym. Tennis skirt to tennis I suppose.

A Victorian Birthday

This week coming is my birthday, and so far it's proving to be quite Victorian. Let it be said I'd like nothing more to be transported back to the late 19th Century, I'd be more than happy ringing a bell for tea (reality is I'd be more likely answering it). I truly am a sucker for anything Victorian, nothing pleases me more than a good old Masterpiece Theater and glass of wine on a Friday night. My birthday this week involves a 3 and an 8 (choose which order, it's fine). Dear friends are well aware of this Victorian passion and are used to going into a meditative state when I start talking about domestic violence in the Tenant of Wildfell Hall but this birthday they sure got it right with the old gifts! A fellow Piscean gave me this truly stunning Victorian jacket, bodice number above, wow, it's amazing...the fabric! the chartreuse colour!

Another dear friend handmade these ridiculously gorgeous cards below, with my initials in the corner, Victorian lady on bike....turn it over, it's the lady from behind! Each envelope includes a little torn piece of Victorian goodness also....beautiful!

These two below are more from my growing Victorian collection, the black velvet bolero I found in an incredible store called Vanessa's in Baltimore, this store is insanely cheap and Vanessa will keep you occupied and digging for literally hours. Once when I was there I picked up a gorgeous silk slip, in NYC this would run close to $100, she charged me $5, and seemed fairly apologetic as it had a barely-there tear, go there if you can!

This weekend our Etsy store goes on vacation for two weeks, as soon as I get back I'm taking up this Victorian pastime below, photo collage, would also love to start a book club, how can I find other Victorian ladies?!

Winter White

Both Adrienne and I love crisp and clean white, which is a bonus seeing as she lives in Vancouver and is surrounded by skiers, skaters and boarders right now, and I'm in NYC which is getting a blanket of snow each week it seems, though it's not a blanket is it? It falls and we rush to the window "it's snowing!" and then within 5 minutes we are dodging the enormous icy puddles like moats (no bridge here, move on), there's no longevity with New York snow, it's like dairy free ice-cream or an H&M sweater (when has one ever kept you actually warm?). Anyhoo, all this gray sleety, slushy business means wearing white anything on your feet would be foolhardy which is a bummer because all those lovely creamy soft suede-y vintage lace-ups and boots out there are calling our name! Here's some snow that actually ventured into my apartment yesterday, I'm pretty sure it was trying to say "let me in, I can stay just like this! I can stay white just let me innnnnnnnn".....we hope we can find a home for these wonderful winter white shoes below, somewhere the snow is puffy and white....and there's a wardrobe...and a fawn....

Speaking of the Olympics…have you heard they are happening in my backyard? Did you see that Arnold Schwarzenegger carried the Olympic torch? We Canucks are still scratching our toque-laden heads on that one. Nothing says Canadian Olympic Spirit like a former Austrian body-builder turned American actor turned California Governor who admitted to using steroids.

Some people find it hard to believe that I love sports (both watching and playing) AND fashion. Well folks, it is possible. It’s also possible to be a sports fan AND look fashionable while doing it.

Also, because I believe thrifting shares some of the same ideals as the Olympic spirit (effort, struggle and refusal to give up) I thought I would share with you some of my Canadiana vintage items that I plan on wearing during the Games.

My 1974 off-white wool Hudson’s Bay Coat with sheep skin collar, hand embroidery and chrome details may be one of my best finds ever and was only…wait for it….five dollars. It fits me like a glove, is toasty warm and is a classic Canadiana piece. Perfect for the Olympics.

Last up is my Ol’ English Duffle Coat. I don’t know why this feels sport’s fannish, but it does. I‘ve had this second hand duffle coat in my closet for years. My very good friend Sheila sent it to me when I first moved to Toronto to help keep me warm. It’s been a staple in my closet ever since. Think I’ll wear it with my new Hudson’s Bay toque (see photo above). Any good Canadian wouldn’t be caught dead at an Olympic event without a toque.

What We Kept: Part Two

It’s true, as Amy mentioned, I love colour. I’m always attracted to greens, blues and yellows. I’ve actually been trying to buy more neutrals lately as nothing in my closet goes together. I’m also always attracted to bright patterns. Particularly stripes. I love the little buggers. Big, wide, small multi-coloured and tonal. I just love ‘em. Here’s a heap of bright things I bought in St. Louis.

By far my favourite item I found for myself was this striped jewel-toned topper coat. Who says you can't wear horizontal stripes? Not me.

“One of these things is not like other” kind of sums up the beige wiggle dress I bought. That being said, I love it and can’t wait to wear it. The detailing around the top is my favourite bit.

So on Sunday the boy and I went to the Met for a drawing exhibit, which was ok though way too many people, but the best thing which made me clap my hands a bit was a Victorian photo collage show which was amazing (have been born in wrong century), little watercolours and drawings with cut out photos scattered in them, seems it was a pastime among Victorian ladies and I want to start it, one lady had drawn a turkey and put little pics of all her family in the feathers. While at the Met I kind of fell in love with these portraits of ladies, I am not into the ladies so to speak but there's something fairly wonderful about these paintings and in particular their clothes...so starting from the bottom above here is the lovely; Judith, A girl in riding habit (everyone should have one), Comtesse de la Tour-Mauberg, Portia and Salome (who is my favourite and coincidentally is the name of my lawyer who dresses rather differently)....Amy x.

Rebel Rug Dilemma

You know when you have a piece of clothing you somehow love but at the same time feel like an imposter when you wear it?

Sometime last year a friend Bonnie hosted a clothing swap, it was just so fun (and must be repeated very soon), bunch of girls, armfuls of cast-offs strewn on the floor, there was a fab mix of styles and tastes so plenty of options and it kept us happily digging and trying on for a couple of hours....after a bit there was scarcely much left, we had all bundled up a few goodies and happily traded things we just couldn't face wearing anymore. Before we started packing up I noticed what looked like a really nice piece of floral carpet folded up on the floor, turns out it was this crazy carpet jacket above. Everyone had just kind of picked around it as it was just a bit too wacky, I felt a little sorry for it on the floor and tried it on for a bit of a laugh. It quickly became one of those great clothing debates, the girls argued that I would see it on a girl in my neighbourhood and say to myself "I wish I had the balls to wear that crazy cool thing" so they said why shouldn't I take it and be that girl who wore it. This is all good in theory and I have worn it & sure enough each time someone says, that's a really great jacket, what is it? carpet? More often than not it hangs on the back of my closet and I just can't decide whether to keep it, put it on the floor for the cat to sleep on or maybe Ades and I should Etsy-it for someone who I know will fall in love with it's floral splendours.... just what shall we do with this rebel rug garment? It's weirdly comforting to see it hanging there though, like a possibility that one day it'll be the perfect weather for a hooded floral carpet jacket. For now it's right next to the gold lurex 1960's super duper tight dress that is equally upholstery-like and not yet worn....at least not yet in public.

Hello! It's funny how hard it is to switch off buying for yourself when thrifting or browsing in vintage stores, and start buying with others in mind! Adrienne and I have shopped for just us for so long that it's a real re-train of the brain, when we just went to St Louis we found equal amounts of great things for us and others, luckily! When we got back I realized everything I bought for me was in a very neutral beige or ivory, almost like they were all canceling each other out....the good thing about shopping with Adrienne is that she's colour gal so we always get a mix, and boy our stuff couldn't be different but we love it all! Above is one of my fave finds from the trip, we found an amazing store that was closing down & these ivory linen pants called my name....unfortunately there's a tear in the back that I need to get mended but the waist and little calf buckles are perfect!

So....I am wondering whether to get them mended with a neutral fabric or one of these vintage hankies given to me by my boyfriend's mother, Joanie. They belonged to her mother though so I'm unsure if having your loved one's grandmother's hankies on the seat of your pants is appropriate? (any mending suggestions welcome!)

Next on the neutral trail was this delicate crochet number, love it but am pretty sure each time I wear it a tiny rip appears, one day it's just going to fall off me in a little sad pile of thread on the floor.

This is another GREAT vintage store, Borough Vintage (also on Etsy here) we found in our last 10 minutes of shopping in St LOuis, such a cool spot, so well merchandised and easy to shop...so easy in fact that within 10 minutes Adrienne and I both had new coats, I've barely taken it off since and it nearly completes the neutrality when paired with the beige pastel flower scarf found at Alice's, do wish it wasn't closing down....

Alice's turned out to be a real treasure trove and so discounted it was hard not to walk out with the whole store (Victorian, 20's, 30's...all the way up....oooh la la!), the last thing I couldn't refuse there was this silk fringed thingy, had hoped it'd enforce me to make my bed but alas it just got me tangled up in fringe so it now resides on a chair untouched except by the cat....

Well it's been a weird old week getting our heads around this Etsy stuff and just generally falling in love with all the great stores on it...thanks so much to Kristina at Beulahveda for her Twittering about our new store! What a nice bunch everybody is....enjoy your weeks and please stay in touch!

Lilian Ivy

Hello there!

This is my lovely grandmother, Lilian Ivy, she passed away just a couple of weeks ago and this is my favourite photo of her, she's in the left corner at her brother's wedding, the dress and the flower! I am now thinking how great a vintage lingerie (a growing passion) store would be named after my two wonderful grannies, Yvonne and Lilian, now that would be sweet, thus also giving us license to further collect lacey knickers and bed jackets....the only thing with vintage lingerie is lying on the buttons isn't really that comfortable...

Look it's Noel, looking quite fabulous here too, this week I took a picture of Noel to my hairdresser and said please give me his haircut, she did a pretty good job too, what I love about this picture of Noel is that he's wearing a frilly shirt and we just posted a frilly shirt this morning in the store, the planets are aligned! If you don't know dear Noel, you must youtube the Boosh and the crack fox, tried to put a link but internet slower than a pigeon bringing a note in it's beak...

Long skirts are so nice. It's just that your legs also need to be long, we tried on this fab Ralph Lauren one we just found and both ended up looking Amish. Which is fine in some ways, not others....here's the skirt we found below, it has adorable buckles on the side and a sweet gold dome, it's just lovely, unfortunately these images are causing grief when uploading to Etsy, but we wanted you to see it anyway....got long legs? enjoy long skirt.

So here's St Louis, the arch! We were told a bunch of times to go up it....but we didn't. Our hotel was however directly beside it so this fabulous view greeted us as we headed out with our rental car and GPS unit we named Margaret, she was good to us but occasionally declared she was recalculating...anyhoo, she got us to some great spots and we shopped till our snowboots dropped off (it was cold there, just a bit). First night we stayed in wacky huge old mansion, was pretty sweet, one of those fake fire things in the room and a couple hundred movies to choose from. Obsession with Bette Midler in The Rose resulted, the sequins! the trailing scarves! the drug addiction! the....well you get the idea, how'd we miss that? maybe because we were aged 7 and 2 when it came out.

Now that we are back in NYC (Ades leaves tomorrow, we'll be separated!) it's all about getting the Etsy stuff loaded, hope you like it, we want to keep this blog going as a musings type thing, next on the agenda is some logo tees and bags, so many people love Mr Reardon's logo that we think it's a great idea to have you walking around with it on your person! Well best we go get ready to take that very man out for a big old dinner to thank him for his considerable art skills, we would say a pomegranate martini is in order, or 3!

The Melanie Griffith Suit

Seems the old runway was loaded with boxy 80's blazers for Winter '09, many shows were harking back to the power suits of 20 years ago (20 years ago!). Now if this Dries number above is a little out of your price range we have a perfectly preserved Liz Claiborne shoulder padded extravaganza right here for, cut straight across & featuring a sweet single button to bring it altogether at the waist. We are selling these pieces separately as they are sized slightly oddly in that the skirt is for sure a 0-2, (waistband is labeled a 'petite 2'), whereas the blazer would fit a small to medium build rather easily. Blazer & skirt are lined with a peach silky fabric, both in power-fabulous 80's condition. Blazer measures 12.5" or 36cm from shoulder to padded shoulder, length is 20" or 50cm. Skirt hits just above the knee and measures 20" in length, waistband is 24" or 48cm, also features small 7" slit at the back & side pockets for relaxed pose while milling around the water cooler.
